I took my 12x12 photos and brightened them up a bit. The above image theme was "Your Entry Number & Colour". SInce we were shooting in black and white, my first idea was to interpret colour with skin tone. I found these two guys hanging out at Victory Square and asked them if they wouldn't mind posing.
"Through the Looking Glass" was a bit more difficult and I didn't really have any ideas. I was wondering around Gastown in search of inspiration, but nothing was coming to me. I found this wall of mirrors and since I was running out of time I shot a self portrait.
My friend Marie had texted me to say that she was in the neighbourhood that day if I needed a model for any of the themes. I told her I would text her to let her know what the next theme was, and it turned out that it was "Nude". She was amazing and was like "Come on over!". I actually really like the way this one turned out. Thanks Marie!!
"In 20 Years". Kind of boring, but worked for the theme... I would say that for this one I should have waited a bit longer before deciding, instead of just shooting. When you only have 60 minutes, it's not easy to decide to capture something that works, or hold out and hopefully get something a bit more interesting.
When the theme "Old School" came up, I knew that I wanted to shoot this wall. So I went to the wall and kind of lurked around hoping to see someone who looked old school. This guy had a sort of retro style ot him, but mostly I just love the wall and the way he is somewhat awkwardly standing.
The concept for this one, "Three Times" was awesome, but the photo didn't turn out at all. I had the idea to photograph a guy blowing 3 smoke rings, so I went into a cigar shop and asked this guy if he could do it. He said for sure he could blow 3 smoke rings, and he did! Sadly, they didn't show up too well on film.
I kind of like this one. I think it's cute. But the theme was "Clever" not "Cute".
I really like this photograph. I went into a store on Cordova because the store was eyecatching and I thought there might be a nice background I could work with. I had an idea to have a woman sort of hiding behind her own hands or behind an object of some kind. This lady was actually really not interested in posing for me at all, but I really wanted her to, because she looked so cool. I told her the theme was "Hide", which made her feel a bit more comfortable, and I told her I wouldn't photograph her face. I think it's interesting how the theme was hide, and I happened to randomly choose someone who wasn't really comfortable in front of the camera. I think the photo turned out beautifully.
This photo's kinda cool! Theme was "Float" and I ended up in a weird hackers space in Gastown.
"Background Story" could have gone a number of ways, but I saw this guy and I really wanted to take his portrait. He's so cool looking! The photo was originally going to be of the two girls behind him, because they wanted to have their photograph taken, but he cracked some joke right before I was going to press the shutter and I turned around and told him to get his butt in front of the camera.
Last theme of the night - "D/evolve". I was pretty tired and totally out of ideas, so I took my camera into the bathroom to do a self portrait, because I felt to some degree that I had evolved over the course of the marathon.
The idea for "Top" came to me right away. I had seen this lady in the store where I took the "Through the Looking Glass" photo, and I was hoping to shoot a photo with her, if an idea came to me. I knew exactly what I wanted to shoot, went in and asked her if she was willing to model for me, and it turned out great!
